Exploring Marseille

I could sit here and go on and on about how going to France has always been a dream. Quite basic, I know. But, it’s true. It has been & still is. One day I’ll make my way to Giverny to Monet’s gardens. After that, I can die the happiest girl in the world. The day trip in Marseille was just the beginning.

The trip began quite smoothly on the bus ride from the port with our guide Juliet. She was truly so wonderful & insightful about the city we were venturing through. As we made our way up through the town to the stop farthest from our port. She took us to a monument that over looked the Mediterranean. From this point, there was a small alleyway that had stairs that led you down toward a little marina. The marina was surrounded by quaint cafes and a street that led to a few stores. There was a tiny beach to the left of the marina that was packed full of Marseille natives that were choosing to enjoy the ocean at 9 am. Honestly, if I had time, I would’ve joined.

We then ventured toward what was referred to as Old Town. This is directly across from the ocean and somehow had a minimal breeze. While stopped in Old Town, we bought some souvenirs. Juliet said the soap from Marseille is a must. Make sure that it read that it was 72% oil. Anything less was not authentic to Marseille. So, I bought myself a bar of lavender soap, a mug, and a few other small items. Ashley you are getting a shot glass. My family & I headed to eat, or more accurately, sit & sweat on the patio of a restaurant. I only had a tequila sunrise at this stop & I have no regrets. Truly, no notes. Afterward, I did successfully order gelato in French, which is the extent of my French knowledge & honestly I find that the only essential.

As we slowly worked our way back toward the port, we stopped at a Basilica that was built in the neo-Byzantine style. If you know me, you know that this type of artwork isn’t my most favorite ever. But, I will concede, they really did know how to build a church. The architecture & details within this building were absolutely stunning. The amount of time that was paid to even the smallest details is insane. My personal favorite part was the ceiling. My biggest thing whenever I go to places like this Basilica, or maybe any building that has a unique architecture, is I look at the ceiling. Sometimes the most underrated part of any building. La Basilica de la Sagrada Familia? Breathtaking ceiling too.

Our last stop was to the main shopping mall in Marseille. At this point, I just wanted AC & maybe a drink. What did I get? Legos. And everyone maybe wondering what type of legos. Don’t be silly guys. I got 2 more mini F1 legos. I did have the poor boy at the check out scan so I can get 2 that I didn’t already have because if I got another VCARB I was going to throw it into the ocean. (Nothing against VCARB personally but I already have 2) I ended up with the standard F1 car & a Williams. I’m actually quite excited.

Marseille was a dream & if Europe wasn’t having record heat throughout, I would’ve been thriving. One step away from my highest level of living I think.

Until our next stop.
