Discovering Montenegro
I will be so honest: I know/knew nothing about Montenegro so going into this adventure, I had little to no expectations.
We entered into the country from the port in the city of Bar. I immediately found the landscape so fascinating because it was like the mountains near the edges of the city were acting in a way to hide the city. They surrounded it & the city was just nestled there on it’s own, living in a little bubble of sorts.
We chose to venture into town on foot because it was such a short distance away from where the busses dropped us off. As we were walking, it seemed to become more clear to me that this place had a unique energy. To me, it felt as though we were entering into a town moving at a slower pace than the rest of the world. Like they were stuck almost in a different era. It was a mix of buildings that were similar to those we had seen in other cities we visited but, a majority seemed like they have remained untouched since the 1990’s.
We walked through the town to a church that had a stunning all white facade & gold dome. The inside was ornately decorated with hand painted walls & ceilings. It was massively impressive & I could go on & on in an art history lecture about what it tells us about the history of the city. You can take the girl out of the Beth Noren lecture but you can’t take the Beth Noren lecture out of the girl. Truly, if you know you know.
With not much else to see around us or, more accurately, not sure what else there was to see, we decided to walk back to the boat.
I ended up purchasing 2 hand made post cards from a local woman with a little stand set up near where the port transportation drops you off.
With that, my time in Bar came to an end. The town & country have managed to fascinate me & I hope at one point I get to go back. It was like discovering an artist or a book before it gets wildly popular. The city seemed to be trying to create a more tourist accommodating energy. Slowly, it will become just that, a tourist dream. Between it’s gorgeous city scape & unique history, Bar (to me) has a lot of potential to be a destination. It’s almost like I arrived a few years too early.
Montenegro, I will be back.
Well, we are almost done with our journey around the Mediterranean. Hopefully, you are enjoying this content. Looking forward to Sunday to discuss our last country!
